Two ways to celebrate our love for watercraft are right around the corner on the calendar. Get out on the peaceful blue water and grab a paddle at the 3rd Annual Boundary Waters Expo, located on the pristine wilderness setting at Seagull Lake public landing on the Gunflint Trail. It is a hands-on event with featured speakers, family friendly displays, demonstrations, and gear for everyone. How often can you try out a new canoe or paddle from one of the established woods gear manufacturers while actually in the Boundary Waters? Here you can, while enjoying the tall pines, call of the loons, and soft lapping lake waves on the shoreline. Mark your calendar and pack your tent. There will even be food demos provided, but feel free to pack hearty meals – you’ll wear them off paddling and relishing in the event’s natural surroundings. We’ll see you there June 17 – 18, 2017. Next, from nutshell prams to birchbark canoes, on the campus of the North House Folk School, located directly on the shore of Lake Superior in Grand Marais, boat builders and watercraft enthusiasts share their love of boat building and all things buoyant during the Wooden Boat Show and Summer Solstice Festival.
From June 16 – 18, 2017, join in the Folk School’s biggest celebration of the year and revel in workshops, sailors’ and travelers’ tales , demonstrations, and boat building. There is even a very distinctive “boat parade” set off the dock in the protected harbor, where you can paddle your heart out and see others proudly display their finely crafted creations!
After enjoying Lake Superior fish chowder and a steam bent brunch, as the sun sets on the longest day of the year, we celebrate! The Folk School hosts the wildly embraced, colorful and wondrous Solstice Pageant, complete with people on stilts, huge puppets, flowers, children, streamers, music, bonfires, and joy, all with the world’s largest fresh water lake as the scenic backdrop. Think: Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream with a North Shore flannel shirt/sawdust fusion. Click here for more information.
Lastly, WHATSUP? You know you want to try one: a Stand- Up Paddleboard. And here’s your chance. From July 21 - 23, 2017, come to the North Shore Water Festival in Grand Marais, and see the latest in gear and newest canoes, paddle boards and kayaks in their natural setting – the Lake Superior harbor! From the newest in how to transport your gear to yoga on a paddle board, this festival will allow you to explore all there is to do on the water!
Remember, if it floats, you will see it out on Lake Superior or bobbing around on one of our warm inland lakes. We go dingy for dinghies, and crazy for canoes.
