Trail conditions remain good, even after yet another week of bizarre weather. A couple inches of new snowfall allowed us to re groom fresh snow back into the base again. Trails are still being groomed with a tiller, and will continue to be for the foreseeable future. Conditions are fast is some areas and slow in others. Surface conditions are a mixture of frozen snow mixed in with fresh powder; areas that had the new snow blown off will see less powder mixed in. Trail base is still hanging around an average of 6 – 7 inches in the majority of areas and is very solid. No glaze-ice spots are present the next day after grooming, though some trails have been requiring a couple passes with the groomer to get the trails to a quality we are happy with.

For the most up to date grooming information, as well specific trail conditions, please contact Bearskin Lodge (1-800-338-4170) or Golden Eagle Lodge(1-800-346-2203). Central Gunflint Ski Pass required.

Discussion:  About 4 inches of new snow a couple of days ago gave us new life on the trails, considerably attenuated by the warm day yesterday.  Our base is still pretty good, so we can extend things for just a bit.

Grooming Report:  All classic tracks are still generally in place from the last snow.  They are beginning to break down, especially after yesterday, and they are very glazed and fast.  Classic ski with caution.  The skating lanes were scarified early this morning, removing the deep ruts from warm temps skating yesterday.  North Advanced, Canyon Curves and Pincushion Mountain skate lanes are in good shape.  Icy but very skiable with just a few seeps.  Snowmen can be skied, but Upper Snowman bore the brunt of the melting yesterday with many seeps, some with running water.  Again, use caution on steep downhills and turns.

The ski conditions on the Upper Gunflint Ski Trails are still great for this time of year.  Most of our trails were groomed on Thursday or Friday.  We got about 2.5 inches of snow on Tuesday, with a little more on Wednesday, for a seasonal total of 64.6 inches.  Most of the base is 4 -5 inches, although I measured up to 10 inches in one spot.  There are a few icy spots, but not that many for the month of March.  Overall, the trails are wonderful for this time of year.

The 40 miles of the Upper Gunflint Ski Trail system is maintained by the Gunflint Lake Trails Group, and we require an Upper Gunflint Trail Ski pass for usage.  Funds raised from these passes pay for land lease fees, and grooming expenses.  Passes can be purchased at Gunflint Lodge (218-388-2294), Gunflint Pines Resort (218-388-4454), and Hestons Lodge (218-388-2243).  All of these resorts are located on the South Gunflint Lake road.  Daily, weekend, week, and seasonal passes are available.
