Biking is not just for summer anymore. Winter fat tire biking is in Cook County MN.

They may gracefully float over every kind of terrain due to their build, but they are very noticeable. As in very big tires. Make that fat tires. One of the fastest growing winter sports now has prime presence in Cook County. Our area was made for fat tire biking! Enjoy the Gunflint Trail area wilderness.  Or, the Lutsen and Tofte mountainous region.  Don’t’ forget the shoreline and trails near the picturesque village of Grand Marais!

Fatbikes are built around frames with wide forks and stays, to accommodate the wide rims and soft rubber for the tires.  And those tires are made to ride on soft, unstable terrain, such as snow, rocks,  bogs and mud.  Cook County, Minnesota has all those ingredients, and the best snow and terrain to suit your pedaling pleasure!

Besides being a new way to have fun, this sport can be enjoyed in any weather, and it takes you places you have never been to before! Think frozen lake shores, iced rivers, cold rocks, and soft snow. Lake Superior provides us with abundant snowfall, and Cook County’s mountainous topography and panorama provides for breathtaking trails and paths.

Trails to ride

It’s not just frozen lakes and rivers here. There are plenty of back roads to explore and new trails are being developed for fat bike riding.

  1. Superior National Golf CourseNEW in 2017 the cart path at Superior National Golf Course is being groomed for Fat Bike use. 3 miles of rolling terrain will be groomed regularly. Usage fee is $10 and can be paid at Lutsen Resort, Clearview General Store, and at Superior National.
