Cook County offers 867 lakes to choose from when it comes to ice fishing. Some are inside the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW), and some are not.  This makes a difference, because different fishing regulation apply in the winter season.  Fishing regulations may be found at the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources website. 

BWCAW regulations (non-motorized area) apply year-round.

Lake Trout is the favored species for winter fishing.  You can try your luck at northern, walleyes, Rainbow Trout, and a variety of pan fish, depending upon the lake.

Safety is of primary importance.  Make sure the ice is thick enough for travel, you have proper clothing and gear, and may wish to bring a shelter.
