Event Navigation

Join in and lend a hand as we build a herring skiff this summer! Wednesdays through Saturdays in June, join Josh Tolkan in the outdoor workshop to help out: no experience required, just a willingness to learn. Tasks will include woodworking, finishing, fairing the hull, painting, building and installing seats, decks and knees.

WHEN: Wednesdays through Saturdays in June, 10 am to 7 pm. See specific dates on the Sign-up Form below.

WHAT: Sign up to help for at least two or more days. Come for a couple hours or for the whole day. We only ask that if you wish to participate you come at least more than once. Sign up to let us know when to expect you.

WHO: Everyone is welcome! No experience required. Ages 12+ with an adult are welcome.

WHERE: On the Harbor at North House Folk School; stop by the School Store at 500 Hwy 61 to check in.

DETAILS: Please wear closed-toed shoes and bring work gloves if possible. We will have eye and ear protection and dust masks available when needed, but you may want to bring your own for fit and comfort.

The Grand Marais harbor and indeed the whole North Shore was once dotted with fish houses and workboats of many small-scale commercial fishing businesses run by families. In the last half-century, the Cook County Historical Society has worked to preserve this heritage. In partnership with CCHS, North House Folk School is building a replica herring skiff, based on an original boat design that has been selected as a good representation of the skiffs built and used in the area. The finished boat will be on display at the Historical Society Museum.

SIGN UP TO JOIN US: Fill out this form to sign up to attend.

North House thanks the Lloyd K. Johnson Foundation and TSCA John Gardner Fund for their support of this project.
