Dark Sky Caravan
August 11 @ 5:00 pm - 11:00 pm
An event every day that begins at 5:00pm, repeating until August 18, 2018
We are on a journey to celebrate and preserve Northeast Minnesota’s dark sky window to the universe. Our journey will begin in Duluth on Aug 11th at the UMD planetarium, and will end on August 18th in the footprint of the darkest night sky in the US east of the Mississippi. Each day we will travel to a new destination with our portable planetarium and telescopes, where we will offer free programming for all.
Inside the UMD GeoDome planetarium, you can take an interactive guided tours of the known universe. From the earth to the edge of the observable universe and all points in between.
Outside, we will have telescopes set-up and experts on hand for viewing the sun, stars, planets and moon. Our journey will begin with the new moon and end on the first quarter moon, giving visitors a chance to view the moon before and after sunset (weather permitting). This week is also the peak viewing time for the annual Perseid Meteor shower, where we can anticipate 50-70 meteors per hour.
Schedule and location
Daily programming will run from 5pm-11pm.
Planetarium shows will be offered on the half hour. In the event of cloudy skies, programming will be limited to the planetarium.
