Sept 12th Tentatively: Portage Lake Memoirs of an Ojibwe Childhood by Maude Kegg

Minnesota is fortunate indeed to be homeland to many vibrant populations of Native nations. And our region is consequently also home to a rich and important body of Native American literature. In this series of four monthly meetings beginning in June, we will read and discuss together four selected examples drawn from this remarkable body of work: Ignatia Broker’s Night Flying Woman (1983); Linda LeGarde Grover’s The Road Back to Sweetgrass (2014); Heid Erdrich’s National Monuments (2008); and a final text to be chosen by group consensus. Our goal will be to examine these authors’ works in contexts of cultural and historical significance that will illuminate the meaningful “work” they do for Native and non-Native readers.

Carol Miller is an enrolled member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma and a Morse Alumni Distinguished Teaching Professor (Emerita) of the Dept. of American Indian Studies and the Program in American Studies at the University of Minnesota, TC.
