Results are in for Norpine Fat Bike Classic Jan. 6 – 7 in Lutsen, Minn.

 

Cook County, Minn. –  Jan. 7, 2016 – Cycling fanatics braved weather that warmed up to 0 degrees Farenheit during the inaugural Norpine Fat Bike Classic in Lutsen, Minn. today. They competed for the chance to win cash prizes in the 24-mile long-course or top finisher awards in the 16-mile short-course.

Top long-course finishers completed their race in less than two hours. Cole House from Oneida, Wis., finished the 24-mile long course in 1:51:38, followed closely by Adam Bergman of Circle Pines, who came in 15 seconds later.  Brendan Moore from Prior Lake was third in the long course with a time of 1:53:49. Chris Stevens of New Richmond, Wis., came in fourth with a time of 1:54:15, followed by Jeff Hall of Minneapolis with a time of 1:55:37. Prizes were awarded to the top long course winners: 1st – $250, 2nd – $100, 3rd – $50.

Female long-course leaders

Female leaders of the long course included April Morgan of Hopkins, who came in first with a time of 2:12:12; Sonia Pond of Minneapolis with a time of 2:31:16; Patti Schmidt-Iverson of Hampton, Minn., with a time of 2:34:33, followed by Christina Ross of Chaska with a time of 2:36:02.

Short course winners

Winners of the short (16 mile) course came in starting at the hour-and-a-half mark led by Pavel Nelson, of Cameron, Wis., at 1:30:24, followed by Chris Daube of Duluth at 1:32:17; Chris Corley of Mankato at 1:32:48; Greg Gentle of Somerset, Wis., at 1:35:28 and James Kauth of St. Paul at 1:36:47.

Female leaders of the short course include: Marilyn Ailey of Thunder Bay at 2:05:47; Jennifer Neuman of Anoka at 2:11:19; Sherri Shrock of Cohasset, Minn. at 2:16:38; and April Wahlstrom of Grand Marais at 2:24:12.

The Fat Bike Classic route began at Superior National Golf Course and took riders on the Norpine Trail System through the Boreal Forest and along the rugged ridgeline of the Sawtooth Mountains, with a view of Lake Superior.  The long course took riders all the way to Cascade River State Park.
