Brave the November Gales
Attend Lake Superior Storm Festival in Lutsen and Grand Marais Nov.6-8
Cook County, Minn., (September 30, 2015) – This year marks the 40th anniversary of the shipwreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald on Lake Superior. Storm-lovers will gather in Cook County Friday, Nov. 6 – Sunday, Nov. 8, 2015 at the Lake Superior Storm Festival for cool weather events, including a history lesson on transit on the Big Lake, a fashion show, wave dash, musical performances and more.
“Treat yourself to a storm-season retreat before the bedlam of the holidays begins,” says Linda Kratt, executive director of Visit Cook County. “This event honors the power and wild beauty of the Big Lake.”
Watch as a few brave-souls shed their fall clothes before the annual “Wave Dash”, which takes place Saturday, Nov. 7 at noon at Lutsen Resort. This quick and chilly dash into Lake Superior supports the YMCA Member Scholarship fund and rewards its participants with bragging rights, and a logo fleece beanie. Participants in “Wave Dash” can often be seen at a roaring fire, sipping warm cocoa after this bone-chilling event.
Those who have visited the North Shore during the fall months know that it requires weather-appropriate clothing, as the North Shore’s storm season can get a bit chilly. Stone Harbor in Grand Marais is hosting “Taking Fashion by Storm”, featuring the latest fall inspired outdoor and lifestyle fashion trends on Friday, Nov. 6 at 5:30 p.m.
Split Rock Light House near Two Harbors, Minn., is commemorating the loss of the Edmund Fitzgerald during the 40th Anniversary beacon lighting ceremony Tuesday, Nov. 10 from noon-6 p.m. To learn more about the shipwreck, join historian Jim Shinners in Grand Marais at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7, as he speaks about the Edmund Fitzgerald and the loss of its 29 crew members during the big storm that took it down.
Tune into local Grand Marias WTIP Radio (90.7 FM). They will have special storm-themed broadcasting throughout the weekend, and will live stream from their website, http://www.wtip.org/ Programming includes a live call-in trivia hour on Lake Superior storms. Call in at 1-800-473-9847 or locally at 218-387-1070.
