Grand Marais, Minn. – August 23, 2016 – Grand Marais, MInn. has been named one of “The 16 Best Places to Live in the U.S. 2016” by Outside Magazine this month.  Outside Magazine holds an annual contest where readers can vote for 64 pre-selected towns across the country, and then features them in “The Best Places to Live in the U.S”.  The towns vary from mountain escapes to beachside getaways and powder hot spots; they included towns, such as Seattle, Wash.; Bend, Ore.; Hanalei, Hawaii; and Denver this year.

“We are very proud of Grand Marais being in the company of these other great U.S. towns,” says Linda Jurek, executive director of Visit Cook County.  “With a population of only 1,327, we know that this honor extends  beyond our small town’s border to our surrounding communities of Lutsen, Tofte, Schroeder, Gunflint Trail, and Grand Portage. We appreciate the efforts of all Cook County residents who leverage our area’s natural beauty with their friendliness and welcoming attitude toward nearly 1.8 million visitors who come to our area each year.”

According to Outside Magazine, “this one-stoplight town, nestled between Superior National Forest and Lake Superior, is the only municipality in Cook County, which is nearly three times the size of Rhode Island. That makes it the de facto gateway to the 1.1-million-acre Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness to the north. This attracts an action-ready crowd: ‘Canoeing, kayaking, biking, hiking, sailing, fishing, skiing, snowshoeing, dogsledding, and rock climbing are just some of the outdoor activities that draw people,’ says Dave Freeman, a local who’s been there 15 years and, in 2014, was named a National Geographic Adventurer of the Year, alongside his wife, Amy, for completing an 11,700-mile kayak and dogsled traverse of North America. ‘It’s a small, welcoming community with vibrant arts and music scenes, a host of great restaurants, microbreweries, and art galleries. It’s also a great place to relax and skip stones, enjoy a cool breeze off the lake, read a book, or just be.”’
