Explore the colorful world of majolica glazes by painting your own tile. Joan will give an overview of these ancient glazes, including their origin and properties, and demonstrate majolica painting techniques. Each student will be able to pick out and paint two tiles with their own unique design. Tiles will be glaze-fired and available for pickup the following Sunday.

Join the Art Colony at Cook County Higher Education for a unique discussion with four artists who will have had spent the seven days prior exploring the concept of water and life on the shores of Lake Superior: Moira Bateman, Annie Hejny, Moheb Soliman, and Nick Wroblewski will all share about their process in their past and present work. Suminagashi, or “floating ink,” is the process of marbling plain paper with water and ink to transform it into a vibrant and colorful design. It originated in Japan as early as the 12th century. In this two-hour class at the Art Colony led by Penny Ortmann and Nancy Haarmeyer, you will be able to create your own unique Suminagashi print and learn more about this art form.
