Fun Fact Friday #6
VOTE BY MAIL IS SECURE
Absentee voting (or vote by mail) in Minnesota is built with multiple layers of security to protect voters and ensure every ballot is counted accurately. Here’s a quick look at the safeguards in place:
Secure Application & Tracking
Ballots are requested through a verified application and tracked in the Statewide Voter Registration System, allowing both voters and officials to monitor their status.**It’s important to note here that each ballot is sent with a label that has a barcode linking to that specific ballot in SVRS.**
Voter Identity Verification
Voters provide identifying information (driver’s license number and/or last four digits of their Social Security number) on the return envelope, as well as their signature. A witness signature is also required to confirm the ballot was properly completed.Ballot Board Review
Trained election officials review each ballot envelope to confirm required information matches the voter’s application before it is accepted. There must be party balance among election judges for certain tasks.**It’s important to note here that if the signatures and/or identifying information on the ballot does not match those on the application, the ballot is rejected and not counted.**
Ballot Secrecy Protected
Once accepted, the ballot is separated from identifying information so it cannot be traced back to the voter.Secure Processing & Counting
Ballots are securely stored and prepared in advance, but votes are not counted or reported until polls close on Election Day.These steps help ensure Minnesota’s absentee voting system remains secure,
accurate, and trusted.
