GRAND MARAIS, MN (Cook County) — One of Cook County's longest-running summer traditions returns Wednesday, July 15, as the Annual Gunflint Trail Canoe Races bring an evening of friendly competition and community spirit to the shores of Gunflint Lake.
Held every third Wednesday in July since 1979, the Canoe Races celebrate the Gunflint Trail's rich Voyageur heritage while raising funds to support the Gunflint Trail Volunteer Fire Department. Visitors and locals alike are invited to spend the afternoon cheering on racers, enjoying good food, participating in raffles and auctions, and experiencing one of Cook County’s most unique summer events.
The event begins at 4:30 p.m. at the Gunflint Lodge harbor, with food, raffle tickets, commemorative event shirts, and silent auction items available throughout the evening. Races begin later in the afternoon and feature competitors of all ages and abilities in a variety of canoe events.

The races are open to anyone interested in participating. There is no advance registration required, and canoes and paddles are provided. Participants simply need to sign up on-site before racing begins.
Proceeds from the event directly benefit the Gunflint Trail Volunteer Fire Department, whose volunteers provide emergency medical and fire services throughout the remote Gunflint Trail corridor. The annual fundraiser has become an important source of support while also bringing together the community during one of the busiest weeks of the summer season.
