Ski North Ultra Returns March 7: Volunteers Needed, Limited Spots Remain for Skiers

Grand Marais, Minn. (2/18/26) - The Ski North Ultra is officially one month out from its second annual event, set for March 7, 2026, and momentum is building for what has quickly become one of the Midwest’s most distinctive endurance ski races.

Hosted in the heart of Cook County, the classic-technique cross-country ski race features a 100-kilometer and a 38-kilometer course option, starting and finishing at Cascade River State Park. The route winds through the State Park, Norpine, and Bally Creek trail systems, showcasing rugged Northwoods terrain, long climbs, and descents along Lake Superior with a true backcountry adventure feel.

Last year’s inaugural event drew 125 skiers from across the region and country, many describing the experience as “gnarly and different,” “so inclusive, so welcoming,” and “a truly wonderful event”. With 5,700 feet of elevation gain over the 100 kilometer course, the Ski North Ultra offers a challenge unlike any other in North America.

Limited Registration Spots Available
The event is capped at 150 participants, and organizers report that there are still a few spots remaining. Skiers interested in taking on the challenge are encouraged to register soon at skinorthultra.com. Conditions are currently looking promising for a full course after a recent large snowfall.

Volunteers Needed
Community support is central to the Ski North Ultra experience. Volunteers play an essential role in everything from course support to hospitality, helping create the welcoming and collaborative atmosphere that defines the event. Those interested in volunteering are encouraged to sign up via Grasshopper.

This year’s event will also feature a new start/finish layout, a post-race meal at Cascade Restaurant, awards from local artists, and community celebrations including bib pick-up at North Shore Winery and a post-race gathering at Up Yonder in Grand Marais.

Visit Cook County is proud to support this growing Northwoods tradition and looks forward to welcoming skiers and spectators alike for a full day of adventure.
