Held on the shore of Lake Superior at the Grand Portage National Monument, Rendezvous Days brings the bustling fur trade era to life. Over 300 costumed reenactors gather within the historic palisade and encampment, filling the grounds with period music, craft demonstrations, and historic games.
It’s a completely free, family-friendly event where you can wander through canvas tents, learn about 18th-century life, and watch skilled artisans at work—from blacksmithing to cornhusk doll making. With no formal dress code required, visitors are invited to come as they are, ask questions, and immerse themselves in the stories, relationship-building, and vibrant history that shaped Grand Portage centuries ago.
Grand Portage Rendezvous Days Celebration Pow Wow

Just a short walk up the hill from the National Monument, the weekend’s celebrations continue as the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa hosts their annual Celebration Pow Wow. While Rendezvous Days honors the heritage of the fur trade era, the Pow Wow grounds come alive with a vibrant, modern gathering focused on Ojibwe dance, traditional song, and family reunion.
The day’s Grand Entry ceremonies are truly inspiring, featuring staff bearers and hundreds of dancers in breathtaking traditional regalia entering the ring to the thunderous beat of drum groups. Visitors can browse local vendor booths offering handmade Native arts and crafts, sample delicious traditional foods, and soak in the welcoming atmosphere. All are invited to attend and experience this living culture!
Sawtooth Stage Race

Mountain bike enthusiasts, take note, because there’s an exciting new tradition hitting the North Shore this August! The Superior Cycling Association is excited to launch the region’s only multi-day mountain bike stage race. Designed to showcase three of Cook County’s premier singletrack networks, this three-day event takes riders through an unforgettable tour of our local forest.
The action kicks off Friday with a time-trial beginning at Britton Peak, followed by Saturday's "queen stage". A demanding 32-mile wilderness push along the Jackpot and High Climber trails into Lutsen. The weekend wraps up Sunday with a thrilling circuit starting in downtown Grand Marais and climbing up to the newly redesigned Pincushion Mountain trails. Expect incredible singletrack, friendly competition, and high post-race energy in town.
Zagaandagaa-Anishinaabeg Exhibit at Chik-Wauk

The Gunflint Trail’s rich cultural tapestry comes to life this season with the debut of Zagaandagaa-Anishinaabeg, a brand-new exhibit at the Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center. This immersive experience honors the "People of the Thick Coniferous Forest" by diving deep into the history and living culture of the Ojibwe-Anishinaabeg through nine interactive zones, featuring breathtaking murals by local artist Sam Zimmerman and artifacts never before seen by the public.
The grand opening celebration captures the true essence of the North Shore community, blending education with the area’s beloved tradition of gathering together. Visitors can enjoy the soulful sounds of local musicians and indulge in sweet and savory treats while exploring. Harbor History Walking Tours

Ever wonder about the hidden stories tucked along the Grand Marais shoreline? Hosted by the Cook County Historical Society, these free, weekly guided walks offer a fascinating glimpse into the harbor’s rich past. Led by an interpretive specialist, the 90-minute tour takes you on a leisurely, one-mile stroll from the History Museum down to the Coast Guard Station, Harbor Park, and Compass Park.
Along the way, you’ll uncover relics hidden in plain sight, like the remnants of an old fire tower base along the breakwall or iron dock anchors from the harbor's busy shipping days. Tours kick off every Friday at 7:00 PM outside the History Museum (8 S. Broadway Ave). Just be sure to wear sturdy walking shoes for the beach rocks and bring a light jacket for that Lake Superior breeze!
Children’s Story Hour at Drury Lane Books

If you're exploring downtown Grand Marais with little ones on a Saturday morning, make your way over to Drury Lane Books. Every Saturday at 11:00 AM, the bookstore hosts its beloved Children’s Story Hour right on the cobblestone beach directly behind the shop.
Led by co-owner Kevin Kager, this free, family-friendly gathering is packed with animated read-alouds, favorite picture books, and plenty of laughs for kids and grown-ups alike. Sitting on the shore of Lake Superior while listening to a great story is a quintessential North Shore experience. It’s open to all, completely relaxed, and the perfect pitstop before grabbing a local treat or strolling the harbor. (Note: Story hour is weather-dependent, and the beach rock terrain can be tricky for mobility aids).
Music by the Lake at Skyport Lodge
