Imagine a world where your kids are free to roam, explore and discover without the distractions of screens or the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Nature in Cook County offers just that—wild spaces where curious kids can investigate their surroundings and thrive. From the rustling leaves of a forest trail to the stillness of a lakeside sunrise, this stretch of the North Shore offers endless opportunities for parents to introduce their kids to wilderness experiences.

Outdoor adventures in Cook County don’t have to be BIG or remote to be memorable for kids (though we have those kinds of adventures, too!). Age-appropriate adventures that meet their interests and skills are a great place to start. Focus on creating positive experiences. Ensure kids have a great time by matching their pace and focusing on fun. As they build their skills and endurance, introduce longer trails or new outdoor activities like snowshoeing, backcountry hiking or canoeing in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW).

Grand Portage National Monument from Mount Rose in Fall by Antonia GrantThere are endless places to introduce kids to year-round wilderness experiences across Cook County. Explore our manageable, family-friendly trails like those found at Sugarloaf Cove Nature Center (be sure to pop inside to see the exhibits, too) and Grand Portage State Park. These hikes offer a chance to explore without feeling overwhelmed. Families looking for the next level of hiking with their kids can try trails like Cascade River State Park, Magnetic Rock Trail, Oberg Mountain Trail or the trek out to Devil’s Kettle (Judge C.R. Magney State Park).

Hiking at Chik-Wauk in the Summer with an Adult and Young Child by Antonia GrantOf course, the goal isn’t just about getting them outside—it's about helping kids build a lifelong love for nature that sparks curiosity, fosters creativity and strengthens both their bodies and minds. Whether exploring a local state park or venturing into a deeper wilderness, the journey is about making nature fun, accessible and unforgettable for all ages.

Ways To Engage Kids in Wilderness Adventures

Ask questions about what they hear, see and feel, and share your thoughts, too.

  1. What does the waterfall sound like?
  2. Tell me a story about how you think this lake got its shape (it can be a silly story!).
  3. Show me a blue flower (or name a specific flower for older children to find).
  4. Point to the tallest tree you can see.

Treasure hunts, nature bingo cards, or games like I Spy can also create exciting ways to engage kids in nature. Bring tools like binoculars, compasses or sketchbooks for added fun! Don’t be afraid to take breaks for further investigation of a stream or large boulder and, of course, some trail snacks! Just remember to respect local wildlife and Leave No Trace as you explore.

Insider Tip: Most local shops have a designated kids section curated to enhance your child's wilderness exploration opportunities.

Kids Programs and Guided Tours

Outdoor programs are another way to teach children about nature, local cultures and history in Cook County. Check out the many family-friendly programs at Sugarloaf Cove Nature Center, Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center, and Grand Portage National Monument. Kids can even become Junior Rangers at Grand Portage National Monument. Many resorts in the area also offer naturalist-led hikes and other educational programs for guests.

Guided tours like dogsledding are fun for all ages by Antonia GrantGuided tours are another way to introduce your family to wilderness experiences in Cook County. Guides provide an additional layer of safety and knowledge to the experience. Many local outfitters and resorts offer guided tours throughout the year, including experiences like kayaking or canoeing, fishing on Lake Superior, and dog-sledding.

Summer isn’t the only time nature shines in Cook County! Spring, fall and winter visitors can (and should!) also explore the outdoors with their kids. Seasonal activities can be a great way to introduce kids to wilderness experiences. Plan a winter trip to take your kids skiing at Lusten Mountains, try ice fishing on one of the many inland lakes or snowshoe to frozen waterfalls.

Safety precautions

Remember to prepare your kids for outdoor adventures, too. Sun protection, bug repellent, and plenty of water are key to enjoying the outdoors together. Teaching your kids how to prepare for wilderness experiences and enjoy the journey will help them foster a lifelong love of our wild spaces.
