Happy Trails Start with Good Dog Manners

Cook County is full of unforgettable adventures for you and your four-legged travel companion. A little courtesy goes a long way in helping everyone (people, pups, and wildlife alike) enjoy the area.

  • Keep your dog leashed when required. Even the friendliest dogs can surprise wildlife, other hikers, or fellow visitors. Check trail rules before you head out and keep your dog close when needed.

  • Pick up after your pup. Always bag and pack out waste. Leaving it behind, even off the trail, can impact water quality, wildlife, and the experience for everyone else.

  • Give wildlife plenty of space. Deer, foxes, moose, birds, and other wild animals call Cook County home. Keep your dog from chasing or approaching wildlife, and admire from a respectful distance.

  • Share the trail. Step aside for other hikers when needed, keep your dog from blocking the path, and ask before allowing your dog to greet another person or pet.

  • Be mindful in town. Not every business welcomes dogs indoors, so look for pet-friendly signage or ask before entering. If your pup stays outside, never leave them unattended.

  • Keep barking to a minimum. A quiet dog helps preserve the peaceful atmosphere that makes Cook County so special.

  • Respect parks and public spaces. Whether you're strolling along the harbor, relaxing in a park, or enjoying a picnic, keep your dog under control and clean up after them.

  • Bring the essentials. Water, a collapsible bowl, waste bags, treats, and a towel for muddy paws can make every outing more enjoyable.

  • Know your dog's limits. Not every trail is right for every pup. Pay attention to heat, rough terrain, steep climbs, and long distances, and take breaks when needed.

  • Leave every place better than you found it. Thoughtful pet owners help keep Cook County welcoming for future visitors traveling with their dogs.
